To the casual person, photography seems more like a form of documentation than an art form.

The basic mechanism of cameras capturing light sounds so matter-of-fact that people often assume we are simply capturing a slice of reality. Well I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. When you see a crescent shaped moon, is that truly its shape? No, it’s still a giant round rock orbiting us in outer space, but the lack of light reflecting back from parts of its surface is what fools us. By picking how and where to aim the camera, we choose a perspective to force upon the audience.
